Sweet Corn at Last
August, 2010
"Is the corn ready yet?" Roger asks about it every day, because once it's ready, that's all he eats. It didn't help for me to say the ears would be 19 to 21 days from the appearance of the first silks. Who wants to count days when you can squeeze 'em, up close and personal? The first ears finally are ripening, a little late because my first sowing rotted in the ground (stuff happens). I'm happy, because it looks like the three sowings that did prosper will flow seamlessly into one another, so we will have continuous corn for a month.
The tomatoes are in flow this year, too. I've taken out a pair of early plants that bore heavily and then started melting down with gray leaf spot, but several others I set out late are just getting going. Meanwhile, peppers are blushing red everywhere I look, and most of the fall garden seedlings are off to a great start.
I'm off to Mobile again to help look after my sweet Mama, and when I get back it will all be changed. Instead of starting each day gathering Williams Pride apples, I'll be picking Asian pears. Instead of freezing squash I'll be working with sweet corn and peppers. I'd better not stay gone too long!
