Barbara Pleasant lettuce tatsoi greens mizuna red mustard kale transplanting winter gardening tunnels
Our plans to fill the plastic-covered tunnel didn't quite work out, so a few weeks ago I went on a seedling scavenger hunt. Armed with a tablespoon, I lifted and transplanted anything that looked promising, starting with Blush Batavian lettuce. The dark green tatsoi transplanted especially well, as did the mizuna and red mustard from a packet of Eclectic Eleven - a blend of mustards, lettuces, and bits of kale.
The plants are nicely rooted now, but I'm still having trouble with wind gusts over 30 mph. My latest wind-resistant strategy is to tie the tunnel to bricks, with boards over the bricks.
Wish me luck. I think I need it
